In July 2007, Sony executive Avi Arad revealed a spin-off of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy focused on Venom was in the planning stages, with Jacob Aaron Estes commissioned to write a script, tentatively entitled Venom. In September 2008, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick signed on to write the film after Estes' script was rejected, while Gary Ross would direct. Variety reported that Venom would become an anti-hero in the film, and Marvel Entertainment would produce the film. The potential film was ultimately canceled. The project languished in development hell for over a decade until it was eventually released on October 5, 2018, directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Tom Hardy, replacing Topher Grace as the titular anti-hero. A sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was released on October 1, 2021, with Hardy reprising the role and Andy Serkis replacing Fleischer as director. Morbius is set to be released on January 28, 2022, starring Jared Leto as the titular character and directed by
Daniel Espinosa. Kraven the Hunter is in development and scheduled to be released on January 13, 2023, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson to portray the character and J. C. Chandor to direct the film, while the two untitled films are scheduled to be released on June 23, 2023 and on October 6, 2023. Spider-Man will eventually crossover with the Venom films, as Serkis stated.
